Wimbledon has not had an easy start. Probably the most important reason: A number of professionals, including Matteo Berrettini and Marin Cilic, two men who had legitimate hopes of doing well in London, tested positive for COVID-19 in the run-up to the event - and had to do it beforehand At the beginning of the games, they buried their hopes of a Grand Slam title prematurely.

These events gave the French Alize Cornet reason to recap how the situation surrounding suspected cases and symptomatic athletes at the French Open had developed a few weeks ago. There, where Barbora Krejčíková announced during the tournament that she had tested positive for COVID-19. However, the Czech from the circle of the most prominent athletes remained the only case.

"Don't test to avoid getting into trouble"

Part of the reason: how Krejčíková's colleagues dealt with it, as Cornet now suggests. "Everyone in the dressing room had it and we didn't say anything," the Frenchwoman told L'équipe. In Paris, for example, there was a “corona epidemic” and a “non-disclosure agreement” among the players, as Cornet explained. "We will not test ourselves so as not to get into trouble."

For Wimbledon, however, Cornet hopes that the positive test results from Cilic and Berrettini will not be reacted to with stricter rules - such as the introduction of a COVID test protocol. It is questionable whether the Frenchwoman is not thwarting these hopes herself with her statements.
