About a year and a half ago, Djokovic hired the American together with his good friend Radek Stepanek as an advisory trainer in his support staff. Agassi got to know Djokovic better and spoke in Melbourne about the development of the six-time Australian Open champion.

"I tried to do some things for him. In retrospect, I don't know whether it would have taken more time for this to bear fruit, or whether it would only have made him more unsettled, ”Agassi is quoted by several media.

“But at the end of the day, the sport gets what it deserves: Novak at its best. I am very happy for him and I even cheer him on, ”said Agassi, who is in charge of Grigor Dimitrov in Melbourne for the first time.

Then Steffi Graf's husband was carried away by a surprising forecast: "During my time in his team, I was convinced that he would win two or three Grand Slams per season over the next few years."

Djokovic currently holds 14 major titles and six are missing from Federer. And, according to Agassi, the 31-year-old is also clearly the man to beat in Melbourne: "He loves to play here and the conditions are very good for him."

"My hope is that Grigor can have a say in the title," said Agassi. "We got to know each other really quickly, I couldn't be happier."

Agassi, a professional himself eight times major winner, gave some in the collaboration with the Bulgarian. “His problem was that he wasn't using his strengths properly. He has to learn to play his pace in a controlled way. I hope that tennis will be a lot easier again soon. ”
Dimitrov faces Italian Thomas Fabbiano in the third round on Friday. Rafael Nadal could meet in the quarter-finals.
