Better condition, appropriate weight and muscle building are just some of the positive effects that tennis can have on our body. Of course, everything with measure and goal here as well - enough top athletes show with multiple injuries that you can also exhaust the fleshy shell too much. However, for the average hobby player, there is relatively little concern about having to walk around like Andy Murray with two artificial hip joints.
The fact that sport in general - but especially tennis - also has extremely helpful and healing effects on our psyche should have gotten around by now, but it is still not as firmly established in the collective perception as physical effectiveness. We show you five reasons why (tennis) sport is good for mental health.
- Stress reduction: Various studies have already proven it - sport reduces any kind of stress in the long term and the body also learns to deal with stressful situations even better. Every tennis player should know the pleasant and relaxing feeling after an intense game. Worries and fears can be alleviated and, ideally, even evaporate.
- Tennis makes you happy: Every now and then everyone comes home from work annoyed or has conflicts at home. Then a trip to the tennis club you trust is a good idea, because the bad mood can be driven away. Movement releases the well-known endorphins, which in everyday jargon are also often called happiness hormones. It is not without reason that people suffering from depression or anxiety disorders are often advised to do sports.
- The ability to think improves: training the cardiovascular system also ensures that new brain cells are constantly being produced. The inexpressibly beautiful protein BDNF is responsible for nerve growth and sustainably improves our cognitive abilities. And if you stay fresh and flexible in spirit, you will find a good solution more quickly, even for unpleasant problems.
- Exercise helps with addictions: Virtually every one of us has some vice - be it alcohol or other drugs, gambling or overeating. All of these things change the dopamine household, which, like endorphin, is jointly responsible for the feeling of happiness. However, dopamine is also released during sport, which has been proven to be healthier than reaching for a fag. Sport is therefore the perfect "substitute drug" and distracts from harmful desires.
- Social ties: Especially during the corona pandemic, some people fell out of the social fabric. Isolation and isolation are not healthy in the long run for humans, who are social beings. Especially after a home office day, it makes sense to ask a few friends to play a nice game of tennis. Besides enjoying the game, we stay connected and continue to feel part of a community.
So: Off to the tennis court - the upcoming holidays may offer a few opportunities to do sports. And by the way, the small sins of Christmas dinner are also worked off. Have fun and stay healthy!
