Dominic Thiem celebrated his comeback after more than nine months

Austrian tennis fans had to wait nine months for Dominic Thiem 's comeback. It didn't matter too much that his first round game against Pedro Cachin took place a few hours later than initially planned due to the weather. At 4:26 p.m. sharp, the Austrian number one entered a match court for the first time in exactly 280 days. The first point went to his Argentinian opponent nine minutes later.

It was supposed to be the start of a horror start for the 28-year-old from Lichtenwörther: Thiem lost the first five games and was quickly confronted with a 0:5 deficit. The 2020 US Open winner almost found his way back into the first set, but Cachin fended off two breakballs when the score was 5: 3 and secured section one 6: 3.

Cachin transports early break to victory

Thiem also had a false start in the second set, Cachin got a break in the Austrian's first service game. The 26-year-old didn't let this lead go away, after 81 minutes of play he converted his second match point to a 6:3 and 6:4 win.

Thiem experienced a bitter disappointment in his comeback match. For the world number 50. In all likelihood, things will continue next week at the ATP 250 tournament in Marrakech. Cachin, meanwhile, meets Manuel Guinard in the round of 16 after the biggest win of his career.
