Dominic Thiem faces big tasks - after the complete regeneration

Novak Djokovic not only won his 20th title at a Grand Slam tournament in London on Sunday, it is now also mathematically impossible that the world number one would not be able to participate in the ATP finals. As well as? Alone for the victories in Melbourne (in the final against Daniil Medvedev ), in Roland Garros (after 0-2 set deficit against Stefanos Tsitsipas ) and in Wimbledon (in the end safe against Matteo Berrettini ) a total of 6,000 points are recorded. Turin can come, after all you know, Djokovic speaks passable Italian.

For Dominic Thiem, things look very different. Austria's number one has always been in the season finale since 2016, in the last two editions Thiem only failed in the final. Now Thiem is still in sixth position in the ATP world rankings published yesterday, Monday. The tennis fan knows, however, that this is irrelevant for one of the eight tickets for Turin. Only the race, i.e. the annual ranking, counts for this.

Hurkacz is eighth at the moment

And in the race, Dominic Thiem is in 34th position after a season that was not particularly smooth before the mishap in Mallorca, with 735 points scored so far. Hubert Hurkacz , winner of Miami and semi-finalist in Wimbledon, occupies the last directly qualifying place. And the Pole has already collected 2,190 points in 2021. In other words: Even a place in the final of the US Open would not be enough for Thiem to get close to Hurkacz in the race. There are “only” 1,200 meters for this. And of course “Hubi” will continue to score even more in the summer.

But the position in the regular world rankings is also on shaky feet. Because in the coming weeks, some results that are still being carried out due to the corona break will be dropped. First of all, there would be the biggest chunk: 2,000 points from the 2020 US Open success. During the Wimbledon tournament, Dominic Thiem had stated that defending his title in New York City could be tight. In terms of time and sport.

Thiem with the points from Indian Wells

This very request in Indian Wells is not quite as urgent. Of the 1,000 meters achieved in spring 2019, only half are left. However, this will remain in the rating until March next year. And speaking of 500 points: Dominic Thiem would first have to defend them in Beijing this fall. Nobody can say with absolute certainty whether this tournament will come about. And then there is also the Erste Bank Open. 500 meters from 2019 are also carried here. After a successful regeneration, great effort would have to be made.

Here is the current status of the Race to Turin
