The draw was announced on the BBC 5 UK radio station, with the participation of Stan Smith, the first winner of the ATP Finals, and Gerry Armstrong, the legendary supervisor of the ATP.
The drawing was drawn from four pairs of two: Djokovic could not end up in a group with Nadal, Thiem not with Medvedev, Tsitsipas not with Zverev and Rublev not with Schwartzman. The two best players from each of the two groups "Tokyo 1970" and "London 2020" will be promoted to the semi-finals.
First Medvedev came into the group with Djokovic, Thiem accordingly joined Nadal. Medvedev was next, he only won the final against Zverev last Sunday in Paris-Bercy. So Tsitsipas had to go to Thiem and Nadal. Schwartzman finally completes the "Tokyo 1970" group, Andrey Rublev the "London 2020" group.
Thiem defeated Nadal in the quarter-finals in Australia at the beginning of the year. The 2019 final in London was lost to Tsitsipas. Against the debutant Rublev the balance is 2: 2.
Zverev has already won against Djokovic in London, in the final in 2018. The German number one was also able to prevail against Medvedev at the finals last year. Zverev recently won clearly against Schwartzman in Cologne.
The matches in Germany and Austria can be seen from Sunday at 1 p.m. on Sky and in the live stream on SkyGo and TennisTV.com.
