It was not just the well-attended arena in Turin that gave alternate Jannik Sinner, who had to step in for the injured Matteo Berrettini at short notice, for a home advantage: The fast conditions in Italy in particular are like a glove for the youngster's brisk baseline game. This was evident early on in his duel with Hubert Hurkacz, Sinner felt himself dazzling from the start and put his buddy from Poland under increasing pressure at high speed.
The logical consequence: Jannik Sinner managed the first break of the game, quickly moved away with another to 5: 1 and dominated the first set with 6: 2. This key continued in the second round, again Sinner managed an early break, which the 20-year-old was able to confirm in competitive games.

In the aftermath, too, Hubert Hurkacz had little to oppose the youngster, Sinner played too dominantly, too confidently - and above all: with too much self-confidence. The South Tyrolean also managed a quick break in round two, with another, the Italian was able to gain a double break lead in this set. Sinner could not be denied that, with 6: 2 and 6: 2, the 20-year-old made his first victory in the Turin cauldron in his first appearance at the season finale.
In the first match of the day, Alexander Zverev and Daniil Medvedev had an epic fight, in the tie-break of the third set the Russian world number two had the better end for themselves. In the last group game, Jannik Sinner and Daniil Medvedev as well as Hubert Hurkacz and Alexander Zverev meet.
