The classification of Nick Kyrgios after the opening defeat against the pair Wesley Koolhof and Neal Skupski, who were in first place, at the ATP Finals 2022 in Turin was not very clear. On the one hand, the Australian explained after the match that the Dutchman and his British partner played at a completely different level that he and Thanasi Kokkinakis never came close to. On the other hand: "We had every chance of winning the match."

Yes, what now?

It is true, of course, that Kyrgios and Kokkinakis are single players according to their self-image. Who are only allowed to play as guests on the bel floor of the double professionals. In fact, the two buddies are the only ones of the 16 participants who currently still have ambitions in singles. A few years ago, however, Horacio Zeballos, Marcel Granollers and Ivan Dodig still knew where the goal was.

Kyrgios with too little energy

Be it as it may. Kyrgios/Kokkinakis did well, qualifying for the semi-finals is still possible. But that would also surprise Nick Kyrgios. "Honestly, my preparation wasn't ideal."

The European indoor season has left out the Canberra man. Also for very pragmatic reasons. “We have to fly 56 hours to each tournament. We get two months a year to play at home. My energy level is pretty low. I would like to go far here. But I'm already looking forward to flying home again.” Which probably also counts as a final rejection of all speculation that Nick Kyrgios saw at the final tournament of the Davis Cup next week in Malaga.
