It can only happen at the ATP Finals that number one and number two meet in the semifinals. In singles, Rafael Nadal and Stefanos Tsitsipas were spared this fate (although: Both would probably have kissed the hand instead of leaving in the group phase). In doubles, however, the two best couples of the season met in the semi-finals. Namely Wesley Koolhof and Neals Skupski, who will finish the 2022 season top of their class, and Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury, the reigning US Open champions.
And with the 7: 6 (7) and 6: 4 for Ram/Salisbury, another peculiarity of the finals was confirmed: it is immensely difficult for the top favorites to win the last tournament of the year. The Bryans last managed to do this in 2014. However, Koolhof/Skupski did not make it easy for their conqueror: In the first set, the Dutchman and his British partner fended off six set balls before they lost the tie-break after all.
The second finalists will be determined tonight from 6:30 p.m. (live on TV and stream on Sky and WOW): Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic are the slight favorites against Lloyd Glasspool and Harri Heliovaara. But what does that mean at the ATP Finals?
