Daniil Medvedev has a few points to defend

The good news first and foremost: Reaching the round of 16 at the ATP Tour 250 tournament in Buenos Aires in February 2012 no longer affects the current ATP world rankings. Well, it really wasn't that bad, but there were actually a few points carried over from Canada 2019 by the start of the Masters 1000 event in Cincinnati earlier this week. To protect the players who do not defend these points because they are not held. From now on, however, only the last 52 weeks will be looked back on. And Daniil Medvedev still has the edge there.

Here, however, a big asterisk has to be attached: Because the objective observer can't shake the impression that the still best player in the world was denied a solid 10,000 points, well, yes. Because Novak Djokovic has not been allowed to start at the Australian Open (potential 2,000 points) or at the 1000s in Indian Wells, Miami, Montreal and Cincinnati due to his waiver of the corona vaccination. Appearing at the US Open in a few days is also unlikely.

Djokovic's win at Wimbledon is not honored

And then there would be the tournament in Wimbledon, which Djokovic won again. But no points were credited for this because the ATP had decided not to award any points due to the exclusion of the Russian and Belarusian players.

Industry leader Medvedev was also affected by this exclusion. However, he has not uprooted any trees in Wimbledon so far. As is well known, Medvedev has to stretch in Cincinnati, but above all at the US Open. Because there the Russian, as last year's winner, has 2,000 points to defend. Just like in the good old days of rankings.
