Alexander Zverev beat Dominic Thiem in two sets

Until they met in the semifinals, both Dominic Thiem and Alexander Zverev had surprises at the ATP Masters 1000 event. A move into the semifinals seemed extremely unrealistic for the Austrian given the seven-week break before the start of the tournament, no less unexpected was the victory of his German semi-final opponent against Rafael Nadal in the previous round.

As in the last meeting of the two to date in the US Open final of the previous year, Zverev got off to a better start: The 24-year-old took the 3-1 serve from Thiem and transported this advantage - after he had previously allowed a breakball in the third game had - then extremely sovereign to win the 6: 3 set over the finish line.

Thiem had to struggle with the windy conditions in the Caja Magica much more than his opponent, but a look at the statistics after the lost first set could have given the fourth in the world rankings a boost: Six of the ten matches between Thiem and Zverev so far went to the Player who lost the first section.

Zverev in the final against Berrettini or Ruud

The native of Hamburg was obviously willing not to follow prank number seven this Saturday. With two quick breaks to 2: 1 and 4: 1, the 24-year-old supposedly quickly made things clear in the second set. But Thiem managed the rebreak to 2: 4 and then brought his serve through despite major problems and the defense of three break opportunities.

The final comeback in the second set was denied to the Lower Austrian: Zverev made his next two service games safely thanks to good serves and converted his second match point after an hour and 36 minutes of play.

Zverev is thus in the final of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Madrid for the second time. In this, the world number six will meet the winner of the game between Matteo Berrettini and Casper Ruud on Sunday from 6:30 p.m.
