Djokovic made a false start and lost his first two service games. The Serbs managed the first re-break to make it 3-1, but Evans managed to reserve the first round. In the second half it was Djokovic who led 3-0 - but Daniel Evans did not give up. Not even when Djokovic had a set ball when the score was 5: 4 and Evans served. The Brit fought off, got the decisive break to 6: 5 and served safely.

For Novak Djokovic it was the first defeat in the eleventh match of the year. The industry leader had previously remained successful at the ATP Cup and the Australian Open and in round two of Monte Carlo against Jannik Sinner.
