Jürgen Melzer and Edouard Roger-Vasselin take off in Rome

Of course, one does not know what possible long-term damage the forced quarantine that Edouard Roger-Vasselin had to undertake as one of the contact persons for Benoit Paire in New York City will have. The nerves of Jürgen Melzer's French double partner seem to have suffered precious little damage. As seen in round one of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Rome, where Melzer / Roger-Vasselin had basically already been able to plan their onward journey to Hamburg. Against Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi and Stefanos Tsitsipas, however, the two veterans fended off three match balls - and left nothing to burn in the following two matches.

Against Nicolas Mahut, with whom Melzer also briefly competed last year, and that Benoit Paire there was a smooth 6: 2 and 6: 4, the quarter-finals against Max Purcell and Luke Saville were even clearer: Melzer and Roger- Vasselin won 6-1 and 6-1. And so today, Saturday, the fourth game after 12 noon on the Grandstand is about making it into the final, still without a spectator, because they will only be allowed on the system in small doses from tomorrow.

The opponents of Melzer / Roger-Vasselin come again from France. And in 2019 they were on the verge of making history. Jeremy Chardy and Fabrice Martin then lost the final of the French Open against Kevin Krawietz and Andreeas Mies, who then wrote a little sports history for their part. Chardy / Martin had to stretch a lot more in their two most recent games than Melzer and Roger-Vasselin, in the quarterfinals the two French won against Denis Shapovalov and Rohan Bopanna with 10: 7 in the champions tie-break.

In the second semi-final, Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos will meet John Peers and Michael Venus. Remarkable: none of the four remaining duos had entered the tournament.
