Fognini had previously won three of eleven games against Nadal, all in 2015. In difficult conditions and after a slow start, Fognini became stronger and stronger, while Nadal was more prone to mistakes. At 6: 4, 5: 4, 40: 0, Fognini had the opportunity to miss his opponent's maximum penalty. Monte Carlo's eleven-time title holder was not easy to say goodbye, however, making five points in a row. And came again to 2: 5.

Now, on the Rainier III Court, tension really came up again: Nadal had nothing left to lose, but Fognini did. The Italian still got two more match balls after 95 minutes. And ended the match with a great forehand longline ball.

Dusan Lajovic is surprisingly waiting in the final on Sunday. After a 2-5 deficit in the first set against Daniil Medvedev, the Serbian prevailed 7: 5 and 6: 1.
