Since 2010 there have only been two non-French players who were able to win the title at the ATP Tour 250 tournament in Montpellier: Tomas Berdych 2012 and Alexander Zverev 2017. How probably against local heroes as final opponents: Berdych defeated before nine years Gael Monfils , Zverev in his triumph Richard Gasquet.

The latter will also try the 2021 edition, which starts on Monday, Monfils will not defend its third title won last year in Montpellier. With which the local hopes have to bear, besides Gasquet, especially Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (Champion 2019) and Lucas Pouille (Winner 2018). Above all, Pouille has to really get going again after a long injury break.

Sinner, Murray, Goffin at the start

On the other hand, others are favorites: Roberto Bautista Agut or David Goffin . Both of them, however, did not show their best behavior at the Australian Open. Goffin lost in four sets against Alexei Popyrin as did Bautista Agut against Radu Albot.

Things are a little different with Jannik Sinner : Although he had to leave after the first match against Denis Shapovalov , he had previously won his second title on the ATP tour. Sinner will therefore be one of the favorites in the Montpellier race. Andy Murray on the other hand, given a wildcard by the organizers, will probably only look from match to match.
