The good news for Federer as well as Thiem: next week, both players have no points to defend at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Miami. The Swiss already lost in lap one last year, Thiem could not compete due to his ankle injury. However, industry leader Novak Djokovic is also playing for very fresh points - the Serb was eliminated early in 2018 against Benoit Paire.

In the regular ATP world rankings, Djokovic confidently leads Rafael Nadal, who has to miss Miami due to his knee problems. Alexander Zverev is still third, the German has to defend the points from the 2018 final. At that time the German lost to John Isner. Juan Martin del Potro, who was unable to defend his Indian Wells title due to injury, dropped to eighth.

Philipp Kohlschreiber caused a sensation in the first 1000 of the year by beating Djokovic, but still lost three places in the charts: in 2018 Kohlschreiber, now number 42 in the world, finally got one round further.

In the Race to London, both Thiem and Federer were among the top eight players of the season. the Swiss is fourth, Thiem made the jump from 90th place to fifth.
