Dominic Thiem was in a hurry to serve in the continuation of the quarter-final match against Italian Gianluca Mager, which was canceled on Friday (local time). The Austrian either tried to play volleyball or went early to hit the ball. Also at the risk of being passed by lean - or to miss out on simple chances on the net like at 2: 4 and 30:15.
Thiem stayed on, but started Saturday 6: 7 (4), 1: 2 behind, the rain had cleared from Rio for a few hours. The problem, however, was that Thiem did not stab Lean as a backlash. Up to the score of 4: 5, the favorite got another breakball with a forehand win. However, the forehand narrowed again in the next rally. The second option was used by Thiem: after a long backhand rally, a ball from Mager landed in the net.
Thiem will overtake Federer after the coming week
Anyone who would have thought that the momentum was now on Dominic Thiem's side was disappointed: Mager immediately managed to break again. And this time the Italian showed no nerves, served safely for his greatest career success
Thiem missed the chance to rise to number three in the ATP world ranking for the first time. After Roger Federer will not defend his title in Dubai due to his knee surgery, the Swiss loses his third place in the charts to Thiem, who will reach a new career high in just over a week.
