Wednesday had been a difficult one for the players at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Rome, but especially for those who were scheduled for the early games. Like Dominic Thiem. At a quarter to nine, the Austrian came to the facility with his coaching staff and was back at the hotel less than twelve hours later - thanks to the weather. And the traffic chaos caused by the supporters of Lazio Rome and Atalanta Bergamo on the occasion of the Italian Cup final in the adjacent Olympic Stadium.

Against Verdasco, Thiem went into the game with a 0: 3 record, at the recent match in Rio de Janeiro 2018 the Spaniard had hit the ball as in his best days.

Breaks always in the seventh game

Thiem started extremely strong in Rome, took Verdasco's first service game to 2-0, but had to accept the rebreak in the seventh game. Thiem remained focused, using his second set ball after 6 minutes to make it 6: 4.

In break two, the chances of break failed to materialize, but Verdasco managed to get Thiem's serve again in the seventh game. And served with some effort to 6: 4. This pattern was repeated in the decision: Verdasco set back to 4: 3, but then immediately allowed the rebreak.

The decision was made in the eleventh game when Thiem gave the Spaniard the breakball with a volley error. Verdasco accepted the invitation and served after 2:43 hours for 4: 6, 6: 4 and 7: 5.
