First defeat in the fifth duel: Dominic Thiem had to admit defeat to Marin Cilic for the first time in the round of 16 of the ATP 250 tournament in Tel Aviv and thus say goodbye to the Israeli metropolis. The Croatian, seeded second, won the indoor tournament 6:7 (6), 6:2 and 6:4.

Thiem quickly took the lead with a break in the first set, but Cilic knew how to counter this and force a tie-break. In this, the Austrian US Open champion of 2020, who had won in three tight sets against Laslo Djere in the first round, retained the upper hand 8: 6.

Cilic remains unimpressed

However, Cilic abruptly destroyed the momentum of the Lichtenwörther at the beginning of the second round and secured the first four games. The world number 16 left this lead. no longer take, set two went relatively clearly with 6: 2 to the Croatian.

In the first game of the third set, Thiem fended off three break balls, and for his part he didn't know how to use a break opportunity when the score was 3: 2. However, Cilic unpacked an excellent serve with this one. A few minutes later, the Croatian was in the lead 4: 3 after a weak service game by Thiem. The Lower Austrian never recovered from this setback, after two hours and 43 minutes of play Cilic converted his second match point to a 6:7 (6), 6:2 and 6:4 win. In the quarterfinals on Friday he meets Botic van de Zandschulp or Liam Broady.
