Kei Nishikori's hoping and waiting hasn't led to the hoped-for success: The Japanese superstar has to undergo an arthroscopic procedure on his hip after all, as he announced on social media. It will probably be six months before he can start playing tennis again, Nishikori said.

The 32-year-old is in 42nd place in the current world rankings, and Nishikori played his last match at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Indian Wells. There he was defeated in round two by Daniel Evans. Competing at the Australian Open 2022 was ultimately never really an option for the veteran.

Kei Nishikori has won twelve singles titles on the ATP tour over the course of his career. His last triumph was in Brisbane in 2019. Only once was Nishikori close to a Grand Slam success: in 2014 he lost in the final of the US Open but Marin Cilic in three sets.
