The audience gave their all again in the third set in the Kia Arena, after all there was also a local hero on the court in John Peers. In addition to neo-partner Andreas Mies, who is someone who plays with and for the fans anyway. But it wasn't quite enough for the newly formed team to reach the semi-finals. Because Mies and Peers lost to Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos 4: 6, 7: 6 (2) and 2: 6. Which also means that there are no longer any German representatives in the main fields of the Australian Open 2023.

Which isn't too much of a surprise in this late phase of a major: Alexander Zverev has to slowly feel his way back after the seven-month break, Angelique Kerber is known to be taking a break. Without these two guarantees of victory, expectations should not be raised too high. In fact, Laura Siegemund had the best individual performance, reaching the third round. And there she narrowly lost to Caroline Garcia after a brilliant start.

The defeat of Mies and Peers corresponded to the paper form: the two went into the Australian Open as number 14, Granollers/Zeballos as number eight. The lower half of the doubles tableau shows that numbers are sometimes a blur: the unseeded pairs Hugo Nys and Jan Zielinski and oldie Jeremy Chardy and Fabrice Martin qualified for the semi-finals.
