Kai Gerber and his team from “Coach the Coaches” have their hands full these days. The German, who has both the A-trainer license of the German Tennis Federation (DTB) and that of Swisstennis, has been developing and promoting talent in tennis for years. And so “Coach the Coaches” will stop at Stefan Weber's facility in Rannersdorf near Vienna from October 22nd to 24th, and the following weekend the workshop in Basel will be on the calendar. Unique events in this form.

With his many years of experience, including as a specialist in Kids Tennis by Swisstennis, the 54-year-old tanner wants to help coaches from the children and youth sector to answer the following questions: What should children be able to do at what age? What does it mean when a child is a "talent"? And: What should the life path of a young person look like if the goal is a place in professional tennis?

Melzer and Antonitsch take part in the panel discussion

The Austrian Tennis Association (ÖTV) has recognized the potential of “Coach the Coaches” and is aggressively promoting the event to its certified trainers at the end of October. Due to the corona pandemic, but also to create a familiar and personal atmosphere, a maximum of 150 trainers should take part in the workshop on October 23 and 24. The event will be rounded off with a panel discussion in which, in addition to ÖTV sports director Jürgen Melzer and Kitzbühel tournament director Alexander Antonitsch,Casper Ruud will also take part. The Norwegian young star will serve at the Erste Bank Open in the Wiener Stadthalle in the last week of October.

A man who has known Ruud since childhood is one of the speakers in Rannersdorf: Espen Lilleaas. The former Prof is the national coach of the U10 in Norway. Severine Tamborero works in the same age range - but in Canada. There, in the last few years, talent seems to have just sprouted up out of the ground. See Bianca Andreescu's 2019 US Open title or Leylah Fernandez's participation in the finals in New York a few weeks ago. Not to forget the successes of Denis Shapovalov and Félix Auger-Aliassime .

What should modern children's training look like?

The contributions by Ruben Neyens also promise to be particularly interesting. The athletics guru, born in Belgium, advised the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and is now at the service of the Dutch Federation. Neyens, Tomborero and Lilleaas want to give the coaches as much as possible with which they can conduct modern children's training. In terms of many aspects: material, technology, athletics, rhetoric or tournament forms.

The Vienna Tennis Association also has a special treat in store for its coaches: On Friday, October 22, there will be a closed event for 16 to 20 coaches in which Ruben Neyens will set the tone. The driving force on this extraordinary weekend near Vienna will be Kai Gerber and his team from “Coach the Coaches”. The anticipation is great. On all sides.
