After the smooth, bitter defeat of Alexander Zverev against Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals of the ATP Masters 1000 event in Paris, it was clear in many places: The native of Hamburg has a new feared opponent. The very close affair, when the Russian and the German faced each other in the group stage of the ATP finals and the former prevailed in the tie-break of the third set, didn't change that much. Daniil Medvedev, as the reading goes, simply has a game that the 24-year-old doesn't seem to like.

And now, a few days later, the German has taught everyone better. Has underlined that he is quite capable of winning the really big matches - like in the semifinals against industry leader Novak Djokovic as well as in the final against Daniil Medvedev. It looked like a lost position against a Zverev, who brought his best performances in 2021 to the pitch in these last two matches of the season.

Performances that also made an impression on final competitor Medvedev. After his defeat, the Russian declared that while Medvedev had legitimate ambitions for an early major title, one should always be careful in this regard: "It's difficult to predict. You never know where a player's career might develop Some can suddenly start to play worse, they can injure themselves, but they can also win 20 Grand Slams, " said the second in the world rankings.

It is clear to him that the German has what it takes to win a Grand Slam title: "Sascha is a great player who can beat anyone. Of course he can be a Grand Slam champion, but he is not that only one, "said Medvedev. "That's where it gets tricky. At the US Open he was in the semifinals and lost in five sets. Who knows, if he had reached the final, he might have beaten me. To be a Grand Slam champion you have to win seven games. Can he do it? Yes. Will he do it? We don't know. "
