The much-cited "second wave" of COVID-19 infections has all of Europe firmly under control these days. After Germany and France, Austria - the organizer of the last ATP event with spectators this week - has decided to go into lockdown from Tuesday. A few hours after the Austrian federal government announced this, Boris Johnson followed suit and announced a partial lockdown for Great Britain.
The ATP season should end there in November, when the eight best players of the season meet at the season finale at the ATP finals. However, these are not affected by the new regulations in Great Britain, as the ATP emphasized in a statement. "The Nitto-ATP-Finals will take place behind closed doors as planned," reads this one.
Rublev and Schwartzman before qualification
Intensive discussions will now continue with the national and local authorities in order to be able to guarantee a safe implementation for all parties involved. As of now, Andrey Rublev and Diego Schwartzman would also serve in London in addition to the already qualified Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Dominic Thiem, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev.
The Nitto ATP Finals should take place from November 10th to 17th and will take place for the last time in London's O2 Arena this year. From 2021 the tournament will be held in the Italian Pala alpitour in Turin. Stefanos Tsitsipas will go to the season finale as defending champion.
