After a walk-through, Thiem could meet the German Maximilian Marterer. The latter was last used in Cordoba, but lost there at the beginning against Aljaz Bedene from Slovenia. Against Bedene, Thiem had won his ninth title on the ATP tour in the final of Buenos Aires in 2018. Marterer is looked after by the German Davis Cup boss Michael Kohlmann and reached the fourth round in Roland Garros last year.

The regular quarter-final opponent of Thiem, who has been in the Argentine capital for a few days with head coach Günter Bresnik, would be Joao Sousa from Portugal, buddy Diego Schwartzman could wait in the semifinals. Also competing in a double with Dominic Thiem. There, however, it goes straight to the pairing Marc Lopez and Pablo Cuevas in position two.

In the lower half of the tableau, two Italians are considered favorites for a deep run into the tournament week of Buenos Aires: Fabio Fognini and Marce Cecchinato. Both like Thiem enjoy a walk-through in round one.
