Dominic Thiem - looking back at his 16 tournament wins

Dominic Thiem has not yet won a tournament in the 2020 season, which has been very short so far. We are therefore happy to look back at those 16 events at which the Austrian number one was ultimately allowed to hold up the winner's cup.

Title number 16, October 2019: Vienna final victory against Diego Schwartzman

Sometimes dreams come true at the tender age of 26. Last October, Dominic Thiem accomplished what a man like Thomas Muster had failed in Vienna: winning the "Austrian Doubles", the tournament victories in Kitzbühel and at the Erste Bank Open in the Wiener Stadthalle. And it was precisely in the opening rounds that Thiem had to conquer his inner demons - because he had never won against Jo-Wilfried Tsonga or Fernando Verdasco before. The quarter-final against favorite opponent Pablo Carreno Busta was short, but Thiem had to struggle over three sets in the semi-final against Matteo Berrettini and in the final against buddy Diego Schwartzman.

Title number 15, October 2019: Beijing - Final victory against Stefanos Tsitsipas

Asia and Dominic Thiem - that was not a big love affair until the event in Beijing 2019. But then the Lower Austrian started confidently against Richard Gasquet, leaving Andy Murray in the quarterfinals no chance. The biggest challenges came, not uncommonly, in the last two matches: first Thiem won very gently in three sets against Karen Khachanov, in the final he also had to go the full distance against Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Title number 14, August 2019: Kitzbühel - Final victory against Albert Ramos-Vinolas

With regard to the opponents at the Generali Open 2019, one could say: Dominic Thiem had to win this tournament. The best-ranked player was Lorenzo Sonego, then number 59 in the world, who stood in the way of the semi-finals, before which Sebastian Ofner (number 167) and Pablo Andujar (75) were allowed to try. But the pressure of expectations was enormous - and final opponent Albert Ramos-Vinolas came to Kitzbühel with the recommendation of the tournament victory in Gstaad.

Title number 13, April 2019: Barcelona - Final victory against Daniil Medvedev

Having to start a tournament against Diego Schwartzman does not speak for a good draw. In fact, Thiem did not allow himself to be ragged against anyone in Barcelona and did not make a single sentence in the following games against Jaume Munar, Guido Pella, Rafael Nadal and Daniil Medvedev. The jump with the ball children into the pool of the facility had really earned it.

Title number 12, March 2019: Indian Wells - Final victory against Roger Federer

First Masters 1000 title for Thiem - at the same tournament that most professionals perceive as the fifth major. Until the semi-finals it went smoothly with two-set wins against Jordan Thompson, Gilles Simon and Ivo Karlovis and a WHERE win against Gael Monfils, then with Milos Raonic a man waited against, who had never won before. The Austrian mastered the task in three sets as well as in the final against Roger Federer.

Title number 11, September 2018: St. Petersburg - final victory against Martin Klizan

The trip to St. Petersburg bore fruit for Thiem after the two clay court games in the Davis Cup in Graz against Australia. And that despite the fact that Jan-Lennard Struff, a very dangerous indoor player, was waiting in round one. The tasks didn't get easier with Daniil Medvedev and Roberto Bautista-Agut. And Thiem had lost to Martin Klizan a few weeks earlier in Kitzbühel at the start.

Title number 10, May 2018: Lyon - Final victory against Gilles Simon

Playing a tournament in the week before a Grand Slam event - and that as one of the favorites for Roland Garros - Dominic Thiem was well received several times. In Lyon, however, after the effortless opening win against Roberto Carballes Baena it was a constant hanging and choking, the ace could have come as well against Guillermo Garcia-Lopez in the quarter-finals as against Dusan Lajovic in the semifinals. Even Gilles Simon, otherwise one of Thiem's favorite opponents, fights back in the endgame. In the end Thiem was allowed to cheer.

Title number 9, February 2018: Buenos Aires - Final victory against Aljaz Bedene

The difficulty for Thiem in Argentina's capital was that he had to play against a local hero in his first two matches: first against Horacio Zeballos, an unpleasant left-hander. Then against Guido Pella, a man who had already given him more serious problems. And also a left-hander. As is known, Gael Monfils in the semi-finals always likes to take Thiem, the final against Aljaz Bedene has become a clear matter as expected.

Title number 8, February 2017: Rio de Janeiro - final victory against Pablo Carreno Busta

To win a 500 tournament without losing a set - you have to do that despite the not overpowering competition. Especially since Janko Tipsarevic and Dusan Lajovic were two competent first opponents, followed by Diego Schwartzman, Albert Ramos-Vinolas and Pablo Carreno Busta and three other clay court experts.

Title number 7, June 2016: Stuttgart - Final victory against Philipp Kohlschreiber

Already in round one it wasn't an easy task with serve giant Sam Groth, Thiem won twice in the tie break. The old lawn fox Mikhail Youzhny was waiting in the quarter-finals, Thiem won in three sets against the Russian as well as against Grand Master Roger Federer. The final against Philipp Kohlschreiber not only had to be moved by one day, but also to the second largest place. Thiem won in three rounds.

Title number 6, May 2016: Nice - Final victory against Alexander Zverev

It's that fast: A year earlier, Thiem had major problems with Leonardo Mayer in the Nice final. In 2016, he only allowed the Argentine three games. And moved safely against Andreas Seppi and then Adrian Mannarino into the final, where he had to give the only set against Alexander Zverev in the whole tournament.

Title number 5, March 2016: Acapulco - final victory against Bernard Tomic

Yes, it is also possible on hard court. And how! The victories against Damir Dzumhur and Dmitry Tursunov were followed by a strong quarter-final against Grigor Dimitrov. And an even stronger semi-final against Sam Querrey. Bernard Tomic defended himself deftly in the final, but had to give up in three sentences.

Title number 4, February 2016: Buenos Aires - Final victory against Nicolas Almagro

Nothing against Almagro, a very fine player. The big Cup Thiems, however, was the semi-final success against Rafael Nadal, which the Austrian sealed in the tie break of the third set. The first two rounds against Pablo Carreno Busta and Gastao Elias were also exciting, just the quarter-final success against Dusan Lajovic was easy.

Title number 3, July 2016: Gstaad - Final victory against David Goffin

Defeating the fear opponent of the early years in a final - after Thiem had just gondolaed from the Croatian coast to the Swiss Alps. Before Goffin, there were still successes against Federico Delbonis, Pablo Carreno Busta and then FelicianoLopez, who was recently (and not particularly long) married.

Title number 2, July 2016: Umag - Final victory against Joao Sousa

Two tasks bring Thiem to the semi-finals: Dusan Lajovic has to give up in the second set, Andreas Haider-Maurer in the third. The semi-final against Gael Monfils is not going well, as the match continues Thiem shows the French who is boss on the pitch. The same can be said about the final against Joao Sousa - minus the weak start.

Title number 1, May 2016: Nice - Final victory against Leonardo Mayer

The release! And the final against Leo Mayer could hardly have been more exciting: Thiem only wins in the tie-break of the third set. before that, John Isner, teammate Ernests Gulbis, Nick Kyrgios and Victor Estrella Burgos had been left behind against the Austrian.
