Dominic Thiem will also contest the ATP Cup

It will take a little more than a week before Dominic Thiem will return to the match court: On December 16, the 2020 US Open winner will make his comeback at the invitation tournament in Abu Dhabi against Andy Murray after a protracted wrist injury. The Austrian played his last match to date on June 22nd on Mallorca .

If the exhibition tournament in the United Arab Emirates is still a kind of test run, Thiem will be really challenged for the first time from January 1st. As part of the ATP Cup, the 28-year-old is expected to meet Daniil Medvedev (Russia), Matteo Berrettini (Italy) and Alex de Minaur (Australia) in the group stage.

Australian Open: Thiem in the round of 16 against Djokovic?

After the ATP Cup in Sydney, Thiem will move to Melbourne to prepare for the Australian Open. A start at an ATP 250 tournament is not planned, instead the Lichtenwörther wants to get in shape for the first Grand Slam tournament of the year.

Thiem is currently in 15th place in the world rankings and from the current perspective - if there are no cancellations - would be a potential opponent of Novak Djokovic, Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev or Stefanos Tsitsipas. After the tournaments in the first week of January, however, there may still be shifts in the world rankings.
