At the US Open in New York, Pliskova failed as number one on the seed list in the second round to the unseeded French Caroline Garcia. Most recently in Rome, Pliskova had to give up in the final against Simona Halep after a little more than half an hour of play due to injury.

Serena Williams said goodbye to the top seeded players on Wednesday. However, without having hit a ball against her second-round opponent Tsvetana Pironkova. Williams withdrew because of achilles tendon complaints.

Ostapenko, number 43 in the world, will now meet the American Sloane Stephens, 2017 US Open winner, or Paula Badosa from Spain in Paris. Pliskova made it to the semi-finals of the French Open in 2017. In her other eight participations, she reached a maximum of the third round.

Petra Kvitova , Pliskova's compatriot, is in the third round after a sure 6: 3 and 6: 3 against the Italian Jasmine Paolini. And there waits for the winner of the game between Leylah Fernandez and Polona Hercog.
