The organizers did not initially provide any further details on the reasons. Before the start of the last major of the year, Serena had complained of pain in her Achilles tendon, preparing for the French Open she had contested in the academy of her coach Patrick Mouratglou. At the US Open a few weeks ago, Williams had reached the semi-finals, where Victoria Azarenka was eliminated.
