The last scenes of her match against Kritsie Ahn showed that Serena Williams is not quite at the height of her creative power: Serena led 5-0 in the second set, hit 40-0 for the second round at the French Open 2020. Williams, however, missed four match points and even had to fend off a break chance from Ahn. After a little more than 100 minutes of playing time, the time had come: the fifth attempt sat, fittingly with an ace.

There were no great emotions in the 23-time Grand Slam winner, who had announced before the start of the tournament that she suffered from pain in the Achilles tendon. She should have concentrated a lot, Serena explained in fluent French. It's nice to see at least a few people in the stands. Your last matches had taken place behind closed doors.

Serena stays in the tournament, Venus is already on vacation

Serena continues to play, in round two against Tsvetana Pironkova. Sister Venus ended the whole season after her opening failure against Anna-Karolina Schmiedlova on Sunday.

Elina Svitolina, number three, also stayed at the 2020 French Open. The Ukrainian, who was still the tournament winner in Strasbourg on Saturday, had some problems with Varvara Gracheva from Russia, but won 7: 6 (2) and 6: 4. Svitolina is now playing against the Mexican qualifier Renata Zarazua.

Last year's finalist Marketa Vondrousova was eliminated. The Czech went down against the young Polish Iga Swiatek with 1: 6 and 2: 6.
