Tournament favorite Simona Halep started the 2020 French Open with a two-set win. Victoria Azarenka also survived the first day at Roland Garros well.

Halep started slowly against Sara Sorribes Tormo on her 29th birthday and was quickly behind with a break. After the 2: 4 in the first set, the 2018 winner did not allow her opponent to win a single game. After 82 minutes of play, Halep made it clear to move into the second round, where she will meet her compatriot Irina-Camelia Begu or Jil Teichmann from Switzerland.
US Open finalist Victoria Azarenka also had no problems at 6: 1 and 6: 2 with Danka Kovinic. At least playfully. In terms of external conditions, however, Azarenka was not quite as flexible as Halep: She had to compete on the Suzanne-Lenglen court, where the weather was very autumnal. Halep, on the other hand, played under the new closed roof on the Philippe-Chatrier Court.
