Roland Garros and Angelique Kerber, that did not develop into a love affair in 2021 either: as in 2019 against Anastasia Potapova and last autumn against Kaia Juvan, Kerber failed again in their opening match. The German number one had to admit defeat to Anhelina Kalinina 2: 6 and 4: 6.

Kerber started incorrectly and was down 5-0 after a few minutes of play. Kalinina had a few minor problems in the following, had to fend off chances of her opponent to make it 3: 5. The first round went 6-2 to the outsider. Also in the second act Angelique Kerber made a capital cold start, could not use some chances, found herself behind again with 0: 5. And made a comeback again, initially with two re-breaks up to 4: 5. Kalinina was nervous. Kerber had a break chance to 5: 5 after 83 minutes of play, Kalinina fended off. Kerber, in turn, countered the Ukrainian woman's first match point with a wonderful dropshot.

But Anhelina Kalinina used the second with a courageous attack. For Angelique Kerber, however, there is good news: The clay court season is over for her, now it's time for her beloved lawn.
