It is always difficult to compete against a good, yes, best friend on the WTA tour, Iga Swiatek explained on Friday at Media Day. Well, the label "best friend" can hang on in the case of Swiatek Kaja Juvan, who was drawn to the defending champion in round one. Swiatek kept the first set short, quickly led with a break in the second round - and had to tremble at the end. With a score of 5: 5 in the second set, the Pole fended off several breakballs, after 87 minutes she had finally secured the 6: 0 and 7: 5.

Also one round further is Marketa Vondrousova, finalist in Roland Garros 2019, who was able to assert herself against Kaia Kanepi in three sets. On the other hand, Kiki Bertens is eliminated. The Dutch lost to Polona Hercog with 1: 6, & .3 and 4: 6.
