While other favorites stumble or have voluntarily left the tournament, Serena Williams' journey at the French Open 2021 continues. The 23-time major winner made up a 1: 4 deficit against Danielle Collins in the second set and finally won 6: 4 and 6: 4. Williams plays in the round of 16 against Elena Rybakina, who beat the returnee Elena Vesnina 6: 1 and 6: 4.

Earlier on Friday, Aryna Sabalenka had said goodbye to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, the big favorite in the lower half of the tableau, the Belarusian had recommended herself as one of the contenders for the second major of the season with her success in Madrid. Naomi Osaka, at the bottom of the grid, had taken herself out of the running. Ashleigh Barty had to give up her second round game against Magda Linette because of a hip injury.

Defending champion Iga Swiatek must therefore be the first contender for victory. After two convincing performances, the Polish will play against Anett Kontaveit on Saturday.
