The series is of course the big topic when you talk about Iga Swiatek: The 20-year-old from Poland has now celebrated 34 wins in a row, the last defeat dates back to February. And the question of whether she would be able to cope with the pressure of being the new world No. 1 after Ashleigh Barty's resignation - well, that hasn't been asked for a long time.
So Swiatek traveled to Paris as the big favorite, and she delivered: she only gave up one set on her way to the final, and she knows how to win the title anyway - in 2020 Swiatek had surprisingly won in Roland Garros and only at that absurd 28 games given, in this tournament it was only 29 so far.
In the run-up to the tournament, Swiatek had declared that he had mastered the "burden" of defending his title in 2021 and could now start more relaxed. And she does.
Can Cori Gauff trip her up? The American is rather surprising in the final.
Gauff had caught the public eye in 2019 with her run to the round of 16 at Wimbledon at the age of only 15, she then cracked the top 20, but recently played without the really big exclamation mark. She has now set that in Paris: Gauff did not drop a single sentence in her run to the final. The only restriction: the best-placed opponent was Elise Meters, number 32 in the world.
