Martina Trevisan continues to ride the wave of success. After the Italian celebrated her first tournament victory on the WTA Tour a few days ago in Rabat, she now seized the opportunity in Roland Garros. Trevisan defeated Leylah Fernandez 6-2, 6-7(3), 6-3 and will play either Sloane Stephens or Cori Gauff in the semifinals of the 2022 French Open on Thursday. The two Americans contest the second quarterfinals on Tuesday.
Fernandez was a slight favorite going into the game between two left-handers, but the Canadian had to have her foot treated after just five games. Deprived of her greatest strength, namely her footwork, Fernandez fought exemplary to the end, and with a score of 4:5 and Trevisan's serve she even fended off a match point from her opponent in the second set. And used the momentum, won the tie-break of the second round 7: 3.

Fernandez had nothing more to gain in the decision. Trevisan quickly took the lead with a break. Fernandez's renewed loss of serve to 0: 4 finally set the course for the 28-year-old from Florence to reach the semi-finals. Fernandez managed a break to make it 1:4 himself, but immediately gave up her service. Trevisan still had to tremble again - but converted their second match point after a playing time of 2:20 hours.
Incidentally, the last victory of an Italian in Roland Garros was not so long ago: In 2010 Francesca Schiavone defeated Sam Stosur in two sets in the final. The last finalist in 2012 was Sara Errani, who lost in the final to Maria Sharapova.
