Barbara Haas had to give up in the first round of the French Open

For Barbara Haas it was only the third appearance in a Grand Slam main field after the US Open, in Roland Garros the world rankings were 143. never entered the main draw at all. In the USA, the 24-year-old had saved the way through the qualification, because at the Grand Slam in New York City she did not qualify due to COVID-19. In Paris, on the other hand, the Austrian had to gain the chance in three rounds to make another attempt towards round two in a major.

The start was anything but made to measure for the young Austrian. Hsieh made the early break in the first half. Haas was able to equalize this, but had to give up the serve again a little later. This time the Austrian did not counterattack - a little later, Hsieh won set one 6: 3.

Only Thiem and Rodionov in the race

Barbara Haas did not have a reason to add to this: In set two it was the Austrian who made the early break of the set and initially took the lead 2-0. But only initially, Hsieh managed the rebreak and equalized to 2-2. As if that weren't enough, the lady from Taiwan made another break and consequently served on winning the match.

But Haas fought his way back into the game, managed the rebreak at the right time and had a chance of winning the set with a score of 6: 5. These half-chances remained unused - a tie-break had to bring the decision. In this Haas got off to a catastrophic start and fell 6-0 down. So Su-Wei Hsieh finally came to a fairly safe 6: 3 and 7: 6 (1) success.

So Barbara Haas failed in her third appearance in a Grand Slam main field in the first round. From an Austrian point of view, after Dennis Novak's exit against Alexander Zverev, only two out of four athletes are still in the tournament: Dominic Thiem, who surprisingly clearly defeated Marin Cilic, and Jurij Rodionov, who celebrated a marathon victory over Jeremy Chardy yesterday.
