Finally real clay court tennis for Dominic Thiem: with lots of curves and rhythm and also cut, but also predictable. This was promised by the meeting with Pablo Cuevas in the third round of the French Open - and it was delivered. Thiem started slowly, but secured a place in the round of 16 after a playing time of 2:36 hours and a 6: 3, 4: 6, 6: 2 and 7: 5. There is definitely against a Frenchman - either Gael Monfils or surprise man Antoine Hoang.

In the first game Thiem gave up his serve and was 0-2 behind after a few minutes. The following five games went to the Austrian, after 38 minutes and four set balls Thiem had the first round in his pocket.

Dominic Thiem now against Gael Monfils

However, nobody saw the break for Cuevas to 4: 2, probably not even the 33-year-old who was born in Argentina himself. Thiem saw this similarly and immediately managed the rebreak with the third chance. Another inattention of the led to the fact that Pablo Cuevas actually came to the sentence adjustment. If at that moment the veteran thought of a second success against Thiem at the french Open, Thiem pulled his tooth. At the beginning of sentence three as well as sentence. Not only was Thiem clearly the boss on the pitch in terms of play, the previous year's finalist was also clearly ahead in terms of fitness.

The only chance for Pablo Cuevas: Short concentration gaps at Thiem, which in the sixth game of the fourth set suddenly led to a rebreak. Until 5: 5 everything went according to plan, then Thiem turned up again briefly. And finally made the decisive break. After a playing time of 2:35 hours, the Austrian was allowed to celebrate.

As expected, Gael Monfils will be in the round of 16 on Monday. The Frenchman in 14th place prevailed in three sets against his compatriot Antoine Hoang.
