Swiatek, who of course greets from the top of the table, starts against a qualifier, but could meet Ludmilla Samsonova in round three. Swiatek had serious problems with the Russian in the semifinals in Stuttgart. The appropriate quarter-final opponent would be Karolina Pliskova from the Czech Republic.

Pliskova's compatriot Barbora Krejcikova, last year's surprising winner in Roland-Garros, is making her comeback after a long absence from the tour at the Bois de Boulogne. Krejcikova starts as number two against Diane Parry of France and would meet Anett Kontaveit in the quarterfinals.

Osaka vs. Conqueror of Australia

It will be difficult for Naomi Osaka. The Japanese, who doesn't feel particularly comfortable on clay anyway, has to play Amanda Anisimova right at the start. Osaka was eliminated from the Australian Open earlier this year against the US-American, who played strongly again this year and lost to the later winner Ashleigh Barty in the semifinals of the French Open in 2019.

Angelique Kerber plays against Magdalena Frech, Andrea Petkovic against local hero Oceane Dodin.

Here is the quarter-final according to the seed list:

Iga Swiatek (POL/1) Karolina Pliskova (CZE/8)
Paula Badosa (ESP/3) Aryna Sabalenka (BLR/7)
Maria Sakkari (GRE/4) Ons Jabeur (DO/6)
Anett Kontaveit (EST/5) Barbora Krejcikova (CZE/2)
