Kirsten Flipkens and the ankle - they don't really go together so far this season. After the Belgian twisted her ankle in the second round of the WTA 500 tournament in Abu Dhabi against Sofia Kenin at the beginning of the year and then took part in the Australian Open with a handicap, Flipkens now had to start at the French Open due to a renewed ankle injury cancel.

"Unfortunately, I have to announce my cancellation for Roland Garros because of my ankle injury. I want to be 100 percent and be able to give 100 percent when I step on the pitch. Of course, it hurts to withdraw from a Grand Slam - the first slam I have missed for many years, "wrote the 35-year-old on Twitter.

The last time Flipkens missed a Grand Slam tournament was in 2012, when she was unable to take part in the classic lawn at Wimbledon. A year later, however, the Belgian even reached the semi-finals in south-west London. Flipkens also succeeded in doing this in Paris two years ago, but this time in doubles.

When the world rankings-92. will return to the WTA tour is still unclear. In any case, Flipkens wants to fully recover from her injury beforehand. "I have to be patient, work hard and, above all, listen to my body to come back 100 percent healthy," said the 35-year-old.
