How safe Alexander Zverev felt against Matthew Ebden was illustrated by a scene in the fifth game of the second set: As in round one, the German had made an early break, Ebden was in danger again with his own serve - and Zverev hit a simple ball. The consequence? A set of pushups. Much to the amusement of the audience, but also by coach Ivan Lendl and playmate Angelique Kerber, who had taken a seat in the German box next to the Zverevs family.

In fact, Zverev's success, and thus the German team's final, was never in question. The ATP Finals Champion was too solid, the backhand of Ebden was too faulty. The Australian often sought his salvation in network attacks, but remained completely unlikely as a setback.

This means that on Saturday (9:00 a.m.CET, live on Eurosport and in our live ticker) there will be a repeat of the final duel of 2018 between Germany and Switzerland at the last Hopman Cup. A year ago, Roger Federer had won his individual against Alexander Zverev, Angelique Kerber hers against Belinda Bencic. The Swiss remained successful in doubles.
