It was at the beginning of the year when Reilly Opelka put forward a rather daring thesis: Hubert Hurkacz would finish the 2021 season in the top ten in the world, the high-serving American said in a video for the ATP.

At the beginning of April, this prognosis no longer seems too far out of thin air, as Hurkacz is now in 16th place in the world rankings. The main reason for this is of course the triumph at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Miami, which the Pole fixed on Sunday with a two-set win over Jannik Sinner.

Victories over Tsitsipas and Rublev

"I played some of the best tennis of my life," beamed the 24-year-old after the triumph in Florida. "I was solid throughout the tournament and after moving through I was still more motivated for the next round. I think that's something special for me," said Hurkacz.

Especially, that was the way to the title for Hurkacz. The world number 16. cleared six well-known players on the way with Denis Kudla, Denis Shapovalov, Milos Raonic, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Andrey Rublev and Jannik Sinner and thus fully deserved the crown in Florida.

"My tennis is getting better. I work hard with my coach and I'm super happy that it worked out here," said Hurkacz, who trained a lot in Florida last year during the Corona break. "That is part of the success I had here," said the Pole, referring to the tournament victory at Delray Beach at the beginning of the year.

Great self-confidence at Hurkacz

It was no coincidence that Hurkacz saw the first title of the season in January: "I've had great faith in myself since the beginning of the season." At the same time, however, he is also aware that he still has to improve in the future: "We still have to improve a few things and try to get better every day."

With the victory in Miami, Hurkacz could now have laid the foundation for an extremely successful season. After all, the 24-year-old is now bursting with self-confidence: "Winning a tournament like this gives you extra motivation and extra belief that you can do it." Prophet Reilly Opela will be happy to hear that too.
