Difficult omens shaped the thoughts of the tournament office at the second event of the Carinthian Ladies Lakes Trophy in Annenheim on Thursday morning. Because of the bad weather forecast in Carinthia from the beginning of the afternoon, people “hoped” for quick matches at the ITF W25 clay court tournament so as not to have to resort to plan B. So much in advance: The matches could all be ended. As so often, there were three matches with a playing time of more than 2:30 hours.

Not so in the match of the day between sixth-seeded Czech Tereza Smitkova and Sinja Kraus, the last remaining Austrian in the tournament. After a brilliant start, Kraus, who had already celebrated her first ITF W25 title win in Warmbad Villach on May 22nd, was able to win 6:2 in just over half an hour. A similar picture in the second set: After initial, brief problems and a few minor mistakes, the Viennese was able to build on her performance from the first set and win the second round 6: 4.

That means: Quarterfinals – and again an absolute top game. Because now the 20-year-old will meet an even more prominent name on Friday not before 11:00 a.m., none other than the two-time Grand Slam winner Laura Siegemund. The former world number 27. from Germany eliminated the Slovenian qualifier Nika Radisic this Thursday with a 6:0, 6:1 also in a rush. An absolute highlight is therefore to be planned for Friday as well.
