US Open winner Dominic Thiem (27) has given his approval for the Laver Cup next year. After superstar Roger Federer (Switzerland), the Austrian is now the second player to take part in the fourth edition of the continental comparison between Europe and the rest of the world in Boston in 2021 (September 24th to 26th).

The world number three Thiem and the 20-time Grand Slam champion Federer, who started the tournament three years ago, compete as part of the Europe team under the leadership of Björn Borg. Further participants have not yet been determined. Team Europe has achieved prestige in all three previous editions.

Thiem also in Tokyo 2021 at the start

This heralds a full summer 2021 for Thiem: A few days ago the 27-year-old announced at the ATP Finals in London that he was planning to take part in the Olympic Games in Tokyo. However, there is still a big question mark behind their event. Dominic Thiem has been part of the European team at the premiere of the Laver Cup 2017 in Prague and last year in Geneva. He skipped the second edition in Chicago in 2018.

The Laver Cup is a kind of counterpart to the Ryder Cup in golf, and world ranking points are not awarded. The results of the matches have recently been included in the official ATP statistics. Originally, the Laver Cup should have been held from September 25 to 27, 2020. However, it was postponed due to scheduling problems as a result of the corona crisis. The Laver Cup will take place in London in 2022.
