Will Roger Federer play his last match alongside Rafael Nadal?

Now it's official: There will be no final appearance from the Maestro in singles. Rather, Roger Federer will complete his last appearance as a professional tennis player in doubles - on Friday. The Swiss announced this in a long, well-received press conference in the run-up to the Laver Cup, where Federer, as a co-organiser, holds many strings in his hand.

Nevertheless, the Swiss is fully aware of the competitive character of the event - and in order not to damage it, it seems, the 41-year-old will only step into the ring one last time in doubles. Primarily because physically there is apparently no longer inside, as Federer announced between the lines on Wednesday. Too many complications on the way back had persuaded the man from Basel to end his career. He felt like he was chasing something that was almost impossible to achieve.

Federer and the partner question

The big question now undoubtedly arises: Who will accompany Roger Federer into his well-deserved tennis retirement? And there is actually only one logical answer: Rafael Nadal. Federer not only has long-standing competition with the Spaniard, but also and especially a long-standing friendship. The two companions in which the two high-flyers have won everything there is to win in tennis.

Of course, Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic also shaped Roger Federer's career. However, the Swiss has always had a tense relationship with the latter, which is why the Serb seems the most unlikely candidate. The relationship with Murray was characterized by harmony, but actually it can only be Rafael Nadal. The man with whom Federer recently opened up more and more often at joint exhibitions. A man for one last big hurrah.
