"We are happy to have achieved our goal of a two-week tournament," said Feliciano Lopez, tournament director of the Madrid Open. "It's well deserved, necessary and gives us the opportunity to enjoy the best tennis for a few more days."

"The Madrid Open is well respected in the tennis community," said WTA Chairman Steve Simon.

Madrid has been one of the stations of the ATP Masters series since 2002. From 2002 to 2008 it was part of the year-end hard court season. In 2009 the tournament settled on clay in the Caja Magica, the facility is one of the most futuristic and impressive of the entire tour. Since that year, the WTA has also made an annual stop in Madrid.

In the 2021 season, the Madrid Open is slated to begin on Tuesday, April 27th with the women's qualification. Two days later, the first lap of the women's peloton takes place. The men's qualification is scheduled to begin on April 30th.

The Madrid Open had to be canceled in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. Instead, the organizers set up an eSports event in which several top stars competed against each other online in a video game. Andy Murray won the men, Kiki Bertens prevailed in the women.
