Osaka had played with a thick bandage around her thigh on the way to her third Grand Slam title - a reaction to the injury she sustained at the preparatory tournament in New York City. And because of the fact that she did not play in the final of this tournament against Victoria Azarenka. The Belarusian was then again opponent of Osaka in the final of the US Open, who could assert herself in three sets.

On clay, Naomi Osaka would not have been one of the closest favorites in Roland Garros. With the momentum and self-confidence of New York City, however, she could have done very well. In addition to Ashleigh Barty and Bianca Andreescu, the third of five women who had won a major in 2019 and 2020 is missing. Only Simona Halep , who won Wimbledon a little more than a year ago, and Sofia Kenin, Australian Open Champion 2020, will serve at the Bois de Boulogne.

Halep will play against Dayana Yastremska in Rome today. The Romanian won in Paris in 2018 and would probably have gone into the tournament in Paris, which starts on Sunday, September 27th, even if Osaka had competed as the big favorite. Halep had renounced the US trip, preferred to contest the clay court event in Prague - and won.
