Jannik Sinner's cancellation of the 2021 Olympic Games in Tokyo was pretty bad for Italian tennis legend Corrado Barazzutti.

Jannik Sinner lets go of the Olympics

The fact that Jannik Sinner called for the ATP Tour 250 tournament in Atlanta should have made people sit up and take notice. Because competing in Atlanta and at the same time at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, that would not be possible in the calendar. And so it was probably not that surprising that Sinner gave up the hunt for gold, at least this year. The next chance will be in Paris in 2024.

Corrado Barazzutti, however, Italian tennis legend and longtime Davis Cup captain of the Azzurri, is going to court with Sinner whether his rejection. "No athlete without physical problems would do without taking part in the highest competition in the world," said Barazzutti via Facebook. "Especially not if it is your first participation."

Graf wins gold in Seoul in 1988 - and the Golden Slam

Now it can be argued whether for the tennis professional as such, participation in the Olympic Games is actually the highest of emotions. It was not until 1984 in Los Angeles that white sport returned to the program, back then as a so-called demonstration competition. In 1988 there was finally precious metal in Seoul, Stefanie Graf got it from the women - in addition to the four Grand Slam titles that year.

Corrado Barazzutti never had the opportunity to participate in the games. If you continue reading his Facebook entry, the suspicion arises that, unlike Jannik Sinner, he would have taken the chance. "If you obviously don't believe in certain values, if certain principles don't apply, then it's better to stay at home."
