Alexander Zverev remains on medal course: After his problem-free victories against Yen-Hsun Lu and Danniel Elahi Galan against Nikoloz Basilashvili, the German number one put in a concentrated performance, won 6: 4 and 7: 6 (5) and thus moved into the quarter-finals on. The chances are pretty good there too: Zverev will either play against Liam Broady or Jeremy Chardy.

Against Basilashvili, Zverev dominated as usual with his serve and proved to be the more solid setback in the decisive phases. In the second set, after the break to 5: 3, it already looked like a sure win for Zverev, but Basilashvili came back and saved himself in the tie-break after defending three match points. There Zverev gave the mini-break to 2: 0, Basilashvili equalized with a terrific return to 4: 4. And messed up two rallies afterwards an actually feasible backhand volley, which gave Zverev two match balls. And the fourth attempt finally succeeded.

However, Stefanos Tsitsipas is eliminated. The Greek co-favorite won the first set against Halle champion Ugo Humbert, but after that the Frenchman came up strongly and won round two in the tie-break. Tsitsipas fell after the last point and had to take a medical break. In the decision, Humbert was the more aggressive player, winning 2: 6, 7: 6 (4) and 6: 2.

Medvedev and Khachanov in the quarterfinals

Before that, Daniil Medvedev and Karen Khachanov had made it to the quarter-finals. Medvedev struggled with the heat and Fabio Fognini alike, but won in three sets as did Khachanov against Diego Schwartzman. Khachanov now plays against Humbert, Medvedev meets Pablo Carreno Busta, who defeated Dominic Koepfer 7: 6 (7) and 6: 3.

There was also good news for the Japanese tennis fans: Kei Nishikori beat Ilya Ivashka 7: 6 (7) and 6: 0.
