The last injury break, which Belinda Bencic took when the score was 4: 3 in the third set of the Olympic final in Tokyo, seemed to pay off immediately: With a freshly taped toe, the Swiss woman broke to 5: 3. Marketa Vondrousova came back again and earned two breakballs in the ninth game. A few moments later, Bencic had her first match point and Vondrousova fought off. But couldn't use the next chance to break again. And so Belinda Bencic was allowed to fall on her back after 2:30 hours of play and a 7: 5, 2: 6 and 6: 3 and befriended her gold medal.

In the first women's match of the day, Elina Svitolina won bronze in a three-sentence thriller against Elena Rybakina.

Bencic went into the final as a clearly better classified player, the number twelve in the world already reached two finals this year: Most recently at the bett1 Open in Berlin on grass, where Bencic lost to the Russian surprise woman Liudmilla Samsonova. At the beginning of the year it was enough for the final in Adelaide, but Iga Swiatek was too strong. Vondrousova was in one of the preparatory tournaments in Melbourne in the semi-finals, in Roland Garros it was enough for the round of 16.

On Sunday, Bencic will definitely get the second medal in Tokyo 2020: Then she will play together with Viktoria Golubic in the doubles final against Katerina Siniakova and Barbora Kreicikova. Belinda Bencic fell over to a mixed start with Roger Federer after the maestro's cancellation.
